ModelMania Divisions, Eligibility, Contest Rules and Judging

2024 Divisions and Categories

NOTICE: The Themes are separate from the contest categories. To be considered for a theme award the models must be registered specifically in a theme category.

Contest – Eligibility

  • All models, unless otherwise noted, are eligible for competition at this event.
  • The IPMS “definition of plastic” and “plastic composition” rules are waived for this event.
  • Model must be built & painted by the modeler for whom it is registered.
  • Proxy entries are allowed at the same fees as normal registration.
  • Large model collections, oversized models, or special display needs require coordination with the Head Judge no later than 30 days before the event. Such entries may be limited to maintain a manageable space.
  • Models previously winning awards at past ModelMania(s) and models placing at a Nationals Convention are ineligible for competition.
  • All Models are subject to the decency clause in the “Event Guidelines”.
  • “Pre-paint” models are ineligible for competition.
  • Limited adult assistance is allowable in the Beginner Division only.
  • All models entered in the contest must remain in the contest room until judging is completed to remain eligible.

Contest Rules

  • Lobbying for or against any model is grounds for disqualification of the offender’s model(s).
  • Markings may be used to determine category placement.
  • Hypotheticals, Vacuum-Formed, scratch-built and conversion entries will be placed in their appropriate categories.
  • Sci-Fi objects may go into non-Sci-Fi categories if they fit – i.e. Back to the Future DeLorean in an Auto Category.
  • “Box stock” categories may only use parts provided in the kit. “Cleaning-up, accurizing, and clarifying” of the parts is allowed; however, no scratch-built parts, parts from other kits, or after-market parts may be used. The model’s instructions must be on display with model. After-market decals are allowed. Seat belts and shoulder harnesses, as well as antenna wires can be added with the model and still be considered Out of the Box.
  • “Collections” are defined as any group of five (5) or more closely related models.
  • “Group Projects” shall be by five or more modelers and include at least 10 models not including figures.
  • Bases are allowed in all categories, provided that a “slice of life” or story is not portrayed (diorama); otherwise it must be entered in the Diorama Division.
  • Handling of model will only be done by the owner of the model, Division Judges, or the Head Judge.
  • Handling of model will be to a minimum for proper table placement and for judging.
  • Triathlon is models from three different divisions
  • Sweeps are allowed.

Contest Judging

  • Judging for this event will be by committee.
  • For 2024 the Judging Criteria will be based on a points system. The system will award a range of points based on the following criteria:
    • Construction
    • Finish
    • Accuracy
    • Intangibles
  • In addition, judges will evaluate the “story-line” of dioramas.
  • Only in the Diorama Division will judges evaluate bases.

  • IPMS/Houston respects and admires the skill and Artistry of this hobby, regardless of the subject. However, common-sense standards of good taste and family viewing must be maintained. Please be advised, that “mature” or “provocative” (e.g. Rated R) subject matter is subject to omission from the event at the discretion of the Show Director or Head Judge. Decisions are final. This “decency clause” applies to all participants of the show.
  • No person will be allowed in the event areas without proof of prior registration or general admission.
  • Children must be accompanied by a guardian (age 18 or older).
  • Any person – child or adult – found handling any models in the display or contest areas, other than his or her own, is subject to ejection from the event.
  • No food or drink is permissible in contest room or display areas.
  • Contest room will remain open during judging; however, we ask all viewers to cooperate with the judges during the judging process.
